This Wednesday we’ll do something local so that Elyse can join us.
Conejo Peak beckons me to take it on again. There are awesome views overlooking different communities in the Conejo-Las Virgenes area. We’ll be taking on Conejo Peak this week, not to be confused with Conejo Mountain. This Peak stands at 2854 feet and resides in the northern portion of Circle X Ranch overlooking Newbury Park. It’s one of The Santa Monica Mountain’s highest peaks, yet is seldom conquered by foot. Instead, it has two trails out of Hidden Valley used exclusively by its equestrian residents and not the general public. Sign up and I’ll guide you on this trek to this elusive peak as I take you on the former secret route to the top from the Hidden Valley Overlook Trail. The views are fantastic from the top, but this trail will be too demanding for many hikers, since it includes an extremely steep 200 yard section.
I will be setting a moderate pace with breaks on the uphill portion of this 11 mile round trip trek. I plan on starting early to beat the heat during the 2000+ foot assent of this peak. Beyond the peak we can do a little exploring.
MEET: At Potrero and Wendy Dr. in Newbury Park
LEVEL: Intermediate hiker with extremely steep trail skills
OVERALL: There will be a maximum overall gain in elevation of 2000’+ with a maximum distance of 11 miles round trip over a 7 hour period.
DIRECTIONS & TIME: From the 101 Fwy in Newbury Park, exit at Wendy Drive and drive south until it ends at Potrero Road. We will meet here at the trailhead no later than 7:30 a.m. and begin the adventure.
