Bulldog Loop – 14.5 miles

This 14.5 mile hike begins at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon and proceeds up Mesa Peak Motorway. After about about 6 miles of uphill trekking with ocean views, we reach the top of Corral Canyon where we can do some optional rock climbing, take a break, snack, horse around, etc. See picture.

Then we leave the Backbone Trail toward Castro Crest and Bulldog Motorway where we begin our descent into Malibu Creek State Park. We’ll hike through the MASH site and traverse MCSP, climb some more hills and enter Tapia Park and return to our vehicle. We’ll stop a couple more times along the way. If the Visitor Center is open we will stop there.

Total ascent is about 2800 feet. Highlights include ocean and valley views, spectacular sandstone formations, unidentified ruins, MASH site, Century Lake.

Bring food, lots of water, camera.

DIRECTIONS

From 101, take the Las Virgenes exit and head south for 5 miles. The parking lot is on the right, just past Piuma Road.

From PCH, take Malibu Canyon Road north for 4.4 miles. The parking area is on the left, just before Piuma Road (you might want to drive up to Piuma and take a U-turn at the traffic light.)

Parking fee was $12.00 last time I looked. Bring exact change for iron ranger — be prepared to pay more

Park free on Piuma at your own risk. We are meeting in the pay lot.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
