Beach hike with flowers: Point Dume to Paradise Cove

March 17, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

While this is always a very pleasant walk down the beach, it should be especially pretty this weekend as I have heard that the Giant Coreopis bushes are now in full bloom on top of the bluff at Pt Dume.

Distance: 4.2 miles RT, out and back

400 feet elevation gain/loss

High tide is at 7am, so we should miss that by starting at 8:30am
Low tide is at 2:13, so we may be able to see starfish and other critters in the tide pools on the way back.

From the parking lot we head up a trail that leads to Point Dume. This is a great place to look for migrating whales in March and November. This is where we will see the yellow flowers of the Giant Coreopis. After taking in the bluff top views we walk a ways along the bluffs until we get to a staircase that takes us down to the beach. From here on we are walking on the beach until we get to the pier and restaurant at Paradise Cove. Here we will have lunch. You can either plan to eat at the restaurant or bring a lunch and sit outside on the beach.

After lunch, we will head back the way we came. Should take about 4 hours, which brings us to about 1pm.

Wear shoes or hiking sandals. No need to wear hiking boots. Bring water and a snack. Check the weather and bring a jacket in case it is chilly,

DIRECTIONS:

From Santa Monica drive west (up the coast) on Pacific Coast Highway about 25 miles to Westward Beach Road. Turn south and follow Westward Beach to its end, where there is a spacious parking lot. I don’t remember the fee for parking, but it could be steep($14).

Trail statistics are approximate.  For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
