SUMMARY:Beat the heat with a local "Pop-Up" 3-hour hike early Saturday Morning
DESCRIPTION:Where: Gates Wildlife Preserve/Newhall Open Space – Newhall CA \nSaturday is expected to be hot\, so get out and move for a few hours on a newly discovered trail called “Twister” that I doubt any of you have hiked. Also\, its close – in Newhall – just south of Newhall Avenue and Railroad Ave. Get there in a few minutes\, and hike for a few hours\, and be done by 10 am before it ever gets hot. \nWe’ll start early – at 7 am\, and be done by 10:00 am. \nThe trail starts out as a dirt road with minor elevation increase\, but then we start heading up a hill climb to the top. Its 1290 feet of climb\, then back down the way we came. If we keep a good pace\, that leaves us time for one of two other loop trails that will add another 2 miles or so. Because of the impending heat\, we’re going to play it by ear and see how you’re feeling about adding a bit more. \nThis trail is not hard\, but its mostly all uphill\, but in the shade and should be pleasant enough. I’m ranking it a low 3 because we’ll be moving fast\, and covering about 3-5 miles in a few hours. Come enjoy the quite local area\, with views of hillsides with large oak trees and a view along the way. \nBring a minimum of 2-3 liters of water\, electrolytes\, hats and sun screen are recommended. \nBe aware that we’ll be hiking in an Extreme Heat Watch October 2\, 10:00 am until October 8\, 08:00 pm – where high temperatures are forecast to be about 99 degrees. We will be watching the temperature\, and will call it a day if it starts hitting the low 90’s earlier than I think – but by 10 am when we finish\, it should still only be 87 degrees. \nWe will take a quick water break once or twice\, but no snack time or longer break is planned. We’ll hike at a moderately brisk pace suitable for conditioned intermediate hikers. If you have any medical issues or concerns\, or don’t do well with heat and steep climbs\, think twice before signing up please. \nStats:\nMinimum 3.1 miles (unless we decide to explore another 2 mile loop)\nElevation: 1290 feet minimum.\nStarting temperature at 7:00 am: 71 degrees\nEnding temperature at 10:00 am: 87 degrees*\nNote: by Noon\, the temperature is expected to be 99 degrees \nIts nearby:\nIts located at the very southern end of Pine Street\, just off Newhall Avenue (just east of Railroad’s intersection with Newhall Avenue)\, so it’s easy to get to. Go south on Pine. The asphalt will turn to dirt. Keep going ALL THE WAY until you see us\, and a sign and gate at the Gates Preserve (part of the Newhall Open Space area). You can’t miss it. \nHike organizer(s): Gary S \nRecommended for: Level 3 Hikers (Intermediates) due to hiking pace\, warm temperatures and an uphill climb up one or both trails. Based on distance and elevation\, this would be a Level 2\, but because of the expected warmth and climb up one or two hills\, I’m rating this a Level 3. \nWe use the following scale\, so you can rate your own abilities and pick the right hike for you. DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS HIKE IF YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL CONDITION\, OR PHYSICAL AILMENT THAT MIGHT COMPROMISE YOUR ABILITY TO CLIMB UP THIS FAIRLY STEEP TRAIL. \n\nBeginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\nAdvanced: 10-17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain.\n\nUnfortunately\, we do not allow registered hikers on an event to bring a guest since they often don’t see this hike description. Anyone that wishes to hike with the group must join the group (it’s free)\, and read the full hike description and verify that the hike is within your capabilities. \nThe Newhall Pass Open Space covers 540 acres and was purchased by the City of Santa Clarita in 2016. It serves as an important wildlife corridor between Interstate 5 and the 14 Freeway.\nThe Gates Family Wildlife Preserve is located at the southern end of Pine Street in Newhall and is located 23980 Pine St\, Newhall\, CA 91321. Turn off of Newhall Avenue\, going southbound on Pine Street until the road literally ends at the entrance to the Gates Family Wildlife Preserve. Park outside the gates. Parking is free. \nHow to get to the trailhead:\nClick on this what3words URL get a map from your location to the trailhead:\nhttps://w3w.co/pixies.offsite.educates\nChoose NAVIGATE once there\, and it will offer you the option of either Google Map or Apple Map directions from your location to this location. You do NOT need the what3words app on your phone (although we recommend it highly)\nGoogle GPS Pin: 34.350909540408004\, -118.51713517836913 \nTrail GPS Track (see the trail we’re hiking):\nhttps://www.gaiagps.com/public/uU04C2EUZUWOE7xSYwOmBkNh \nNAVIGATION: For ALL hikes\, we highly recommend you use a GPS software app on your cell phone. We recommend either GAIA GPS and AllTrails. Some prefer one or the other\, but either could save your life and keep you from getting lost on a hike. Use one of them! Note: we’ll be scheduling learning meetups to learn how to use these effectively. \nWe rely on donations to continue sponsoring hikes like this. Please contribute by donating via cash contribution (at each hike). \n**[The Ten Essentials of Hiking (link)\nhttps://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/ \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing SCVHikers from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Backpacking for the hearty...to Eagle Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a weekend adventure into the remote Eagle Mountains in the desert of NE Riverside County. We’ll start at the Lost Palms Oasis Trailhead and travel cross-country through open desert terrain to our backcountry camp. This is a dry camp\, so all water needed for the trip must be carried in. On Sunday\, we’ll continue cross-country through canyons and rugged desert terrain to the summit of Eagle Mountain (5\,527’)\, including a Class 2 scramble along the way. After enjoying the summit\, we’ll return to camp\, break down our tents\, and head back to the trailhead. \nThis area is where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts meet\, creating a landscape of rugged mountains\, washes\, and distinctive desert vegetation. And there’s an extra treat for this overnight: we’ll be camping under a new moon! Joshua Tree is an International Dark Sky Park and is known for some of the darkest skies in Southern California\, making this an excellent opportunity for stargazing and\, weather permitting\, catching a spectacular view of the Milky Way. \nThe trip is approximately 9 miles\, to and from\, with about 2\,700’ gain. \nLevel: Strenuous (I Rated) \nCost: $30 park entrance fee per vehicle. None if you have an America the Beautiful Pass or similar. \nSignup Instructions: Register and complete Medical Form and Waiver online and email your recent outdoor experience summary to the Primary Leader\, Gabriela Corchado Lorent \nRecommended Items: 10 Essentials\, shoes with good traction and any needed personal prescription medication. NOTE: This will be a dry camp and all water must be carried in ; 6-8 liters of water recommended. \nSignup Restrictions: If you are sick or have been in contact with anyone with viral symptoms\, please do not attend this outing. \nCarpool: Participants coordinate their own carpool. The Sierra Club assumes no liability for carpools\, ride sharing or anything similar\, which are strictly personal arrangements among the drivers and participants. \nContact event organizers:\nGabriela Corchado Lorent\ngabrielacorchado@gmail.com\n3233630027\nScott Klatte\njsklatte@gmail.com\n3106060430

SUMMARY:Informational Posting-Learn New Skills-Make New Friends-Experience New Adventure
DESCRIPTION:INFORMATIONAL POSTING ONLY-See Website\nwww.wildernesstravelcourse.org\nDear Group Members\, particularly the recent swell of new\, never-been-backpacking-before-but-want-to-start members: There is a great Sierra Club opportunity that is about to begin….an opportunity that only happens one time each year and it is one of the best outdoor learning experiences the Sierra Club has to offer. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competent hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips\, most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. You will acquire skills in trip planning\, preparation\, equipment and wilderness safety to take you into the backcountry in all seasons\, beyond roads and trails with new friends that share your interest in the outdoors.\nAgain\, the course runs only one time each year and takes place in Southern California in four locations as follows: West Los Angeles (Wednesdays beginning Jan 6th;Orange County (Tuesdays beginning Jan 12th) Long Beach/South Bay (Wednesdays beginning January 20th); San Gabriel Valley (Tuesdays beginning Jan 26th);\nThe four geographic areas fill up well in advance of the class start date so register early.\nFOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER FOR THE COURSE GO TO: www.wildernesstravelcourse.org

SUMMARY:Wanna go on a challenging hike?
DESCRIPTION:https://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?formcampaignid=701Po00002AH1nRIAT&mapLinkHref=https://maps.google.com/maps&daddr=I:%20Scodie%20Mountain%20(7\,294%27)@35.651013\,-118.005609#\nJoin us for a day of adventure in the Scodie Mountains and Kiavah Wilderness! We’ll take the less-traveled HPS Route 3 to the summit of Scodie Mountain\, beginning on an old road before heading cross-country through a steep gully to a saddle. From there\, we’ll climb along the ridge to the 7\,294-foot summit\, enjoying expansive views of the surrounding southern Sierra and Mojave Desert along the way. The return takes a different route through the soft\, steep terrain before reconnecting with the road and heading back to the trailhead. \nThe Kiavah Wilderness sits at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada\, where the Mojave Desert and Sierra ecosystems meet. This unique transition zone supports an interesting mix of desert vegetation alongside pinyon pine\, juniper\, and canyon oak. Expect approximately 6 miles of travel\, 2\,600 feet of elevation gain\, and several miles of cross-country terrain. \nThis outing is being led as part of a Sierra Club I-Provisional Leader qualification.
