Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike

I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking.

We’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year.

Our loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found.

Here is a slide show from a couple similar hikes a while back.

Hike is about 7 or 8 miles with about 1,500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide

We may run into poison oak — wear long pants. There may be water in the creeks we’ll be crossing so wear hiking boots you don’t mind getting wet.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
